UAE considers lifting ban on WhatsApp



Dubai: The UAE will soon get rid of the ban on WhatsApp voice calls, which makes it the free Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) solutions available in the nation.

The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) currently limits the usage of numerous programs of VoIP from the UAE, including Skype, Tango, Face period and Viber.

Botim, C'me and YzerChat are the only VoIP programs authorized from the UAE.

In an interview with CNBC, executive manager of the National Electronic Security Authority of the UAE, Mohammad Al Kuwaiti, said its collaborations had improved with the WhatsApp, particularly with technology platforms on security initiatives.

"The cooperation with WhatsApp has really improved, and in most of these [jobs ] we saw an excellent comprehension [from them] of this notion we all have," he explained during the programme"Capital Connection".

"There may be a lift of this prohibit for [WhatsApp] voice calls... and this will occur shortly, this is what we know and comprehend in the telecommunication authority here in the UAE," explained Al Kuwaiti.

When contacted by Gulf News on Thursday, the TRA failed to comment.

Before this season, Gulf News reported that talks were currently in place involving officials in Smart Dubai and"strategic partners as well as the telecommunication sector" to raise the VoIP constraints from the UAE.

Dr. Aisha Bint Butti Bin Bishr, Director General of the Smart Dubai Office, solely advised Gulf News: "When it comes to telecommunications, we're working quite closely with our strategic partners as well as the telecommunication sector to know together with how we could lift these types of restrictions to improve our market longer."
